Important Notice: BOPCAT Transition to New Online Licensing System

The Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists is transitioning to a new online licensing system to improve efficiency, transparency, and application processing times.

Effective June 20, 2026, the Board will begin accepting applications and payments exclusively through the new online system.

⚠️ After June 20, 2026, any paper or emailed application submissions will be rejected and returned.

During this transition period, they encourage all applicants and licensees to prepare for the change and monitor the Board’s website for detailed instructions and system updates.

MetroMFT has been made aware of a concerning issue involving the website 7cups.com, where numerous therapists are listed—without their knowledge or consent. The site collects potential client information which may then be used for the company’s own purposes, raising ethical and legal concerns.

A class action lawsuit has been filed regarding this practice. You can view the legal update here on LinkedIn.

Portability Bills Maryland and Virginia

We are excited to announce that the portability bills presented in Maryland and Viginia these legislative sessions passed favorably. Governor Younghin signed the Bill April 4th and Governor Moore signed both House Bill and Senate bills April 9th. The bills are going to be effective July 1, 2024 in Virginia and October 1, 2024 in Maryland.

Advocacy Report - License Portability

We want to share with you that we have partnered with AAMFT Access MFTs to advocate for increased MFT portability in Maryland in 2024. To support the efforts, AAMFT has contracted with Public Policy Partners, a firm with a proven track record of working with health care groups and licensure portability issues.

AAMFT has also partnered with the Virginia Association for Marriage and Family Therapy to promote MFT portability as well. We will be sharing more information in November at our Fall Conference. There are many ways to be involved.

Advocacy Report

Dear Members,

Many of you have been following our emails regarding advocacy in the past year. We have held two forums to discuss options regarding a MFT Compact and Licensing Reciprocity. We have discussed the pros and cons in our Forum Meeting in June 2021, and we held another meeting in December 2021 to discuss a Study Bill to be submitted in the 2022 legislative session.

At the time, AAMFT was only promoting Licensure Portability, and we chose to pursue it and find ways to come to an agreement between Virginia, Maryland and DC. A few of us attempted to reach out to Virginia and DC Board members to see if there was interest in submitting legislation in the 2022 session that would have allowed for the 3 jurisdictions to agree to have similar language regarding license portability. We learned that Virginia was pursuing license portability with North Carolina and were not interested in submitting any bills in the 2022 legislative session, as they had new leadership in place.

Our lobbyist advised us to submit a study bill that would ask Maryland to look into working together with the other jurisdictions to come up with a plan to have license portability in the DMV area. Unbeknownst to us, the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists (BOPCAT) was already working on this and there was no need for the study bill. BOPCAT tried reaching out to the DC and Virginia Boards, but since our last update, they did not get any response.

Metro MFT Board met with the MFT representatives of BOPCAT and the former Executive Director of the Board, Kim Link who was instrumental in organizing the Compact Bill for counselors. We discussed BOPCAT's efforts and lack of response from the DC and Virginia Boards and the need for the national organization to spearhead the MFT Compact. We (along with the MFTs from BOPCAT) agreed that we would work together to make sure all of our efforts are aligned and to continue to pursue licensing portability while we wait to see if AAMFT comes up with a plan for an MFT Compact or a stronger effort to support license portability across States. If you are licensed in DC or Virginia, we need your help in reaching out to your licensure boards. If there is a need for funds for lobbying or finding a lobbyist to represent us there, please reach out to us. It is important for us to know whose voices we can support and represent when planning fundraising and budgeting future organizational expenses.

As a result of not having other states on board to work on licensure portability, no other current lobbying needs, and having limited funds, we decided to pause Willie Harris' annual contract in the coming year and to instead contract him on an as needed basis to support MFTs in Annapolis in 2023.

With telehealth becoming standard practice, it is urgent that the movement to practice across states becomes a national effort as all other MH professions are moving forward with Compacts.If any of you know of any national efforts or initiatives towards allowing MFTs to practice across States that you think we should pursue, please contact the Metro MFT Board. Remember we are all volunteers trying to manage our work and life outside work. As MFTs, we are also a small group of mental health professionals who need each other to represent our profession as distinctive from other mental health disciplines. The Mental Health Access Improvement Act

AAMFT, in conjunction with its allies in the Medicare Mental Health Workforce Coalition, will host a virtual action day on April 21 to help prioritize passage of the Mental Health Access Improvement Act (S. 828/ H.R 432). We have the momentum on our side now and it is time to act!

President Biden recently released his budget for Fiscal Year 2023, which includes a recommendation for Congress to add MFTs and MHCs as Medicare-eligible providers. With growing support for the initiative, this could be the year that the Mental Health Access Improvement Act is enacted into law.

Welcome Liza Harbison- MetroMFT’s Newest Secretary!

Liza Harbison grew up right here in Maryland. She remained local for graduate school when she attended University of Maryland’s Couple and Family Therapy program. She graduated UMD in 2018. Currently, Liza is a therapist at J. Fang Brehm and Associates, and at Living and Growing, where she works with individuals and couples. Liza recognizes the impact of so many layers of systems in our lives, and thinks these need to be considered as potential resources, sources of strength, and challenges in therapy. She also appreciates how thinking with a systems lens can incorporate the impact of systemic oppression on her clients’ lives and mental health. As Secretary, Liza’s main priority is to keep members informed. She documents key topics during monthly board meetings and drafts summaries for MetroMFT members. Liza’s goal is to help the organization stay organized and be transparent with members.

MetroMFT's Operations Officer: Rachel Chazen

As we work to build the connection between the Metro MFT Board and our wonderful clinical and student members, we thought it might be helpful for you to know a bit about the individuals you have elected.

This month’s spotlight features our MetroMFT’s Operations Officer Rachel Chazen.

Rachel was born in Washington, DC. She grew up in Maryland but has also lived in Florida, Charleston and Nashville. Rachel returned to Maryland at the start of the pandemic in March 2020 to be closer to family. While away, she remained close with colleagues, cohort members, and fellow therapists, which opened up the opportunity for her to join the MetroMFT Board as Member-at-Large for the 2021 term. Rachel shifted her role to Operations Officer after the most recent election.

Like our president Kirsten, and Vice President Jennifer, Rachel graduated from the University of Maryland Couple and Family Therapy program in 2010.

Currently, Rachel is the owner and lead therapist at Rachel Chazen Therapy where she works primarily with teens, young adults, and families. She incorporates CBT and solution-focused models, as well as a strengths-based approach, into her practice.

When asked, “Why are you an MFT/what do you like about being an MFT?”, Rachel responded: “I appreciate and value the systemic approach when helping people. Who we are, and why we are, is often connected to how we were raised and who we have been surrounded by. With better understanding of how those around us have shaped us, and utilizing the support we already have, change becomes increasingly possible. I like to help people assess their strengths, improve their communication, and dedicate time for self-care. I believe well-rounded people are happier people and I love helping others discover ways to better themselves. ”

Rachel’s position as Operations Officer is to lead and promote events and to also ensure that the website and Facebook sites remain up to date.

Rachel’s personal goal in her term as Operations Officer is to connect MetroMFT members to relevant news, increase ease of involvement for members, and to lead a social event within her term.

Fun Facts About Rachel:

- Rachel went skydiving and her mother jumped out of the plane too!

- She loves the beach and tries to get to the coast as often as possible.

- Rachel enjoys creating charcuterie and cheese boards for events celebrated with friends and family.

Meet Laura Golojuch, Metro MFT’s New Member-At-Large

Did you know that Laura is a local? She was born in DC and raised in Arlington, VA.

Laura graduated from the University of Maryland Couple and Family Therapy program in 2015.

She currently sees clients in private practice in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. She also supervises therapists in training, teaches undergraduates, and is completing a dissertation (She has a few jobs!)

When asked, “Why are you an MFT/what do you like about being an MFT?”, Laura responded: “I am an MFT because I’ve always been curious about what makes people the way they are. I’m thankful that I found a profession that seeks to understand people within their contexts!”

Laura’s position as Member-At-Large is to address member concerns and serve as a liaison between the board and the membership.

Laura’s personal goal in her term as Member-At-Large is to drive more involvement and enthusiasm about the organization and connect more MFTs to each other and to important concerns facing our profession. She hopes to also encourage students to get involved with the MFT community.

1) She completed a Yoga Teacher Training and hope to incorporate this into my clinical work someday.

2) She is a proud middle child (and believes this probably also influences the work that she does!)

Meet Viviana

Did you know that Viviana Azar is from Buenos Aires, Argentina? Or that she graduated from the University of Maryland in 1991? Or how about that outside of her work with MetroMFT, Viviana works as a Manager for Adults, Children and Adolescents at Behavioral Health Services at Montgomery County Department of Health of Human Services - Behavioral Health and Crisis Services?

As a family therapist, Viviana believes in the healing power of strong and healthy family relationships. Therefore, she hopes to help individuals, couples and families move to a place of mutual understanding and respect so that they can overcome the challenges of life together in a healthy and productive way. Her passion continues to be working with families of all ages as they transition through their different stages in their lives.

Viviana’s position as Advocacy Officer is to keep the membership informed of the legislative agendas in the Metro area and the national trends for license portability or compact bills that are being promoted in other professions. She will work closely with our Maryland lobbyist to ensure we have representation during the legislative session.

When asked, “What are your personal Metro MFT goals within your position?”, Viviana responded: “I hope to create a committee of members from the different jurisdictions to share information and, if possible, come up with a reciprocity bill for the Metro area that will make it easier for MFTs to be licensed in Virginia, DC and Maryland. My dream goal also is to see if we can work at a national level to reach out to our representatives and see whether other professions are working towards a national license or something similar to allow for Telehealth regardless of where the client resides.”

We asked whether advocating for our profession is important to you and you answered.

Because of all of you who responded, we made it to goal before the deadline!!! As of this morning, August 30th, we’re at $5155 of our $5000 minimum needed to renew our lobbyist, Willie Harris’ contract for the rest of 2021. Thank you SO much for your support and continued contributions in membership and donations!!!

If you did not pitch in yet and would, your donation and membership is certainly still needed and valued!! It is good to have some cushion so we can plan further out beyond December 2021. Please take anyof the following actions:

I. Developing our relationship with a dozen other states that also have regional MFT professional organizations. (Become a Metro MFT Board member!)

We know everyone is busy and aim not to overburden anyone. Most committee meetings would be once a month for up to an hour with another 1-2 hours of individual work so that would be 2-4 hours per month.

We look forward to your ongoing involvement to grow our MFT professional community!

8/18/21 Urgent Metro MFT Update

We are writing to inform you that we are unable to fulfill our lobbyist contract; funds that come directly from Metro MFT membership dues. With overall membership being low, and the inability to hold our in person annual conference due the pandemic, we do not have sufficient funds.

While the organization as a whole is not in jeopardy, we will need to suspend our contract with our lobbyist, Willie Harris, unless we can fund the next two payments. Transparently, we will need to raise $5,000, as outlined in our lobbyist contract. We need to raise these funds by the end of August. If we are unable to come up with the funds needed, we will be pausing our work with Willie.

In addition to having Willie’s eyes and ears alerting us to important local advocacy initiatives, and making sure MFTs have a voice in Maryland, we have begun a project to explore making licensing easier for MFTs in the DMV (as discussed in our June forum). This involves ease of licensure beyond one's home State. Without our lobbyist, we will need to pause this pursuit.

Over 65% of membership funds go towards funding our lobbyist. Largely, Metro MFT was founded based on the belief in the essential nature of local advocacy efforts. Being in this position is a reminder for us. It is an opportunity to make a choice. As a group, do we still have the desire to maintain local MFT advocacy efforts in the same way? Are we committing again to having the support of a lobbyist? These are questions we must answer together.

Meet Jordan Madison

This month’s spotlight features our Metro MFT Treasurer Jordan Madison.

Jordan is from Brooklyn, New York.

She graduated from the University of Maryland College Park's Couple and Family therapy program in 2018.

She has been working as a therapist since graduation but currently Jordan is working to start up her own private practice!

When asked, “Why are you an MFT/what do you like about being an MFT?”, Jordan responded: “I chose to be an MFT because I have a passion for reducing the stigma around mental health, especially in the Black community. I feel as though the family is the foundation, so if I can help families and couples to heal and have healthier relationships, I believe they will in turn create healthy and healed individuals.”

Jordan’s responsibility as treasurer is to provide transparency around how members' money is being used in the organization.

Her personal goals in her term as treasurer are to make sure financial and tax regulations are followed and aim to help with fundraisers so that Metro MFT can have more resources to provide members with networking and CEU events.

She has colors for numbers and days of the week- It's actually called synesthesia.

Did you know that, just as MetroMFT is a professional organization for DMV MFTs, there are similar organizations for various states that also started as divisions of AAMFT?

Since our beginning, MetroMFT has kept in close contact with the other branched off divisions. We even developed a professional organization support group as we collectively navigated the waters of creating our own separate structures and systems. Informally, we call this group COAST (Coalition of Associations for Systemic Therapy).

COAST holds virtual and in person meetings to provide assistance and advice to each other. Last week, our President, Kirsten Sidell, visited Salt Lake City, Utah to attend the most recent in-person COAST meeting.

Among the items for discussion was how to support AAMFT divisions that have more recently become independent. It was decided that current COAST members would reach out to representatives from those additional states to include them in the next virtual meeting this summer. As COAST continues to evolve, inviting other states to join in and offering support seemed important.

What will happen as COAST grows? Is it just a support group for the growing state associations? Will it become a formal national organization? Something else? We do not know for sure, but it has been so helpful for MetroMFT to have the support of other MFTs from across the country.

Meet Jennifer Fang Brehm

This month’s spotlight features our Metro MFT Vice President Jennifer Fang Brehm.

Jennifer was born in Yunnan, China! She grew up in State College, Pennsylvania but is now actively practicing as an MFT in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Like our president Kirsten Sidell, Jennifer graduated from the University of Maryland Couple and Family Therapy program in 2010.

Currently, Jennifer is the owner and principal psychotherapist at J. Fang Brehm and Associates where she works primarily with couples and individuals from multiple frameworks. She incorporates CBT and DBT for individuals with anxiety and/or depression and utilized CBCT and EFT for couples.

When asked, “Why are you an MFT/what do you like about being an MFT?”, Jennifer responded: “We, as MFTs, view problems and solutions through a contextual, pragmatic, multisystems lens at the intersection of personal development, biology, interpersonal relationships, community, social structures/norms, and spirituality. We help to empower clients to grow and become higher functioning; not making them dependent on substances or on us. We normalize and validate.”

Jennifer’s position as Vice President is to carry out the vision of the president, be responsible for the PR committee, and to facilitate conference planning.

Jennifer’s personal goal in her term as Vice President is to connect MFTs to others in ways that make a practical difference to being supported in our profession and let the community know really how good we are at what we do.

Fun Facts About Jennifer:

1) Her goal is to travel to all 7 continents! She has traveled to 5 continents so far for tourism, studying abroad, visiting family, and short term humanitarian work.

2.) She would like to incorporate her love of ballroom dancing with couple’s therapy!

3.) She was wowed by Dick Schwartz demonstrating IFS at Psychotherapy Networker Symposium and since has dreamed of mastering the art of combining cognitive and experiential therapies to help clients access all parts of themselves.

Mentorship Program

We all remember the pivotal years surrounding graduate school. It was exciting, yet stressful, and we had A LOT of questions!

Now that time has passed, and knowledge has been gained, there is no better way to give back than directly to the up-and-coming MFTs.

That’s where the Metro MFT Mentorship Program comes in!

Each interested clinical mentor will be matched with a graduate student, recent graduate, or newly licensed clinician. Mentors will answer questions, give advice, and offer support as needed.

It will be up to the mentor, and their match, to determine the frequency of contact as well as how interactions take place (email, phone, virtually, or in-person).

Mentors, and their match, will determine if interactions occur as questions arise or on a schedule.

Possible topics to explore may include life after graduate school, how to start a private practice, networking as a professional, or ways to explore CEU opportunities.

We ask that mentors commit to one year with their match but want to emphasize that this commitment is meant to be flexible and can easily fit into anyone’s schedule.

Member Benefits and Dues

While there are many benefits to being a member of Metro MFT, one of the most important is that each individual is an integral part of our local professional community.

Though the pandemic has limited opportunities for our CEU and networking events, the Metro MFT Board has been working hard to ensure that member needs and opportunities continue to be developed. We are currently working on two exciting opportunities for members; a Metro MFT Therapist Directory and a Mentorship and Peer Support Program. More information coming soon!

With networking and CEU opportunities being limited at this time, many current and prospective members have been asking (rightfully so!) where their dues actually go.

The answer: it mostly goes to our legislative advocate Willie Harris.

You have likely heard about the Counseling Compact Bill that will allow for professional counselors, licensed and residing in a compact member state, to practice in other compact member states without the need for multiple licenses.

Unfortunately, this does not include us.

Marriage and Family Therapists will need to have their own bill to gain the same benefits that the counselors are working on. It is for initiatives like this that we need the funds to pay a legislative representative.

Transparently, we get the majority of these funds from your Metro MFT member dues and without representation we face uncertainty in gaining the same benefits that other mental health professionals may have.

It is important to our field, community, and license that we continue to work together to have the same necessary and important benefits as the other helping professionals. Hopefully, we can have some fun along the way as well.

Metro MFT is a place where we hope local MFTs feel a sense of community and want to be involved in the goals and growth. We know this is a work in progress and would love to hear any feedback you have to help us reach this goal.

Meet Kirsten Sidell

Did you know that Kirsten is a local? She is originally from Maryland! While she lived in a few other places, including VA, DC, and Ecuador, Maryland has been home for most of her life.

Kirsten graduated from the University of Maryland Couple and Family Therapy program in 2010.

She currently works as a program supervisor at JSSA, where she oversees a team of clinicians who worked in various locations in the community - before COVID. She also has a private practice, where she primarily works with couples. Kirsten is an Emotionally Focused Therapy enthusiast!

When asked, “Why are you an MFT/what do you like about being an MFT?”, Kirsten responded: “We have a difficult time in our culture allowing space for feelings. With couples, I do just that - I help partners to be witness to each other's feelings and experiences to move them to a place of deep connection and intimacy. While I am grateful for my emotional acumen that I gained from my FOO experiences, I did not generally receive the message that my feelings were okay to share with others - and that there was even an advantage to doing so! I am glad to know it now and be able to help others to feel the benefit of this valuable lesson.”

Kirsten’s position as President is to guide Metro MFT, forge connections with other MFT organizations, advocate for our profession, and work with the Board members to implement programming that supports the health of MFTs. Our organization is still in its infancy, and like a parent, she is trying her best to create a space of secure attachment where our organization can begin to develop an independent and thriving culture. To do so, she wants to ensure that there is a clear path for the voices of our local MFTs to guide our decisions and programming as we grow.

Kirsten’s personal goal in her term as President is to support local MFT leadership in ways big and small. She believes that the more we all participate, the less any few people feel charged to take it on by themselves.

2) She is passionate about nutrition! She has taken advanced courses in the impact of nutrition on mental health and implements what she has learned in her practice with individuals.

Meet Our Lobbyist

Willie Harris is the official lobbyist for MetroMFT and has been advocating for Marriage and Family Therapists for more than a decade. Willie works directly with elected officials to protect Maryland consumers of mental health services and our ability to serve them. He informs us of changes in the political landscape in Annapolis, advocates on our behalf during session, and uses his professional expertise and connections in the community to advance the MFT profession and the interests of our clients. Thank you to everyone who has become a part of our new organization as a significant portion of your dues directly finances our ability to keep Willie and in turn our place among the other mental health professionals of Maryland.

Willie was born in Washington, NC, but was raised in Brooklyn, NY. After leaving the Air Force, he went to work for Willie Brown as a political consultant but was soon asked to move to the East Coast to lobby for the Service Employees National Union. In 2003, Willie began working for the Marriage and Family Therapists of Maryland (MAD-AAMFT) and has been dedicated to supporting our profession since. Fellow MFTs describe Willie as friendly, reliable, effective, and a strong advocate for us and our clients in Annapolis!

Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter. Our country is moving through a cultural revolution to advance the rights of Black people and bring attention to ongoing systemic racism, state perpetrated violence, and oppression of people of color. As helping professionals, we are called to be culturally competent providers and vocal opponents of oppression.

As part of our MetroMFT mission, we provide opportunities for our members to be well educated and practiced regarding the issues that are relevant to the current climate. We continue to be interested in building our knowledge and competence in the areas of race relations, power dynamics, racial equity, and privilege. These have always been areas of education, supervision and therapeutic conversation but are particularly culturally salient at the present time.

As an organization, we also seek to engage and educate our community. From our perspective, this includes being vocal with our community about how MFTs are allies in the advancement of the rights of Black people.

We expect our members to continue to improve their understanding and knowledge in these areas through their own self-reflection and education and will support that work in a number of ways.

As members of MetroMFT, we ask that you commit to:

Promoting racial justice in your work
Encouraging curiosity and empathy when it comes to understanding another’s experience
Exploring how racism impacts our community
Working to advance your knowledge of privilege and engage in self-of-therapist work around understanding your own privilege
Being actively anti-racist in your spoken and written words both personally and professionally

So how can MetroMFT assist you during this time?

The MetroMFT Board is pushing forward various opportunities for members to get involved in meaningful conversations and action in support of racial justice. We invite members to share ideas in moving this cause forward. We are also in need of your time to help us take action on the following initiatives:

We stand with all our Black community members, colleagues, friends, family members and clients as we make steps toward true racial justice in the U.S. We want MetroMFT to be a place where people of color find an open seat at the table to participate in and lead the group. Legislative Update

As many of you are aware Maryland’s legislative session ended early this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent social distancing protocols imposed by Governor Hogan. The General Assembly is scheduled to reconvene for a special session in late May 2020, pending any continued social distancing recommendations from the Governor. Despite this unexpected change, this session ended in our favor with the passage of SB182/HB303, Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists (BOPCAT) – Sunset Extension and Program Evaluation. This bill amends the Sunset legislation that regulates BOPCAT and allows us all to practice Marriage and Family Therapy in the state of Maryland.

We are grateful to everyone who could come out to Annapolis on Advocacy Day and meet with key legislators that influenced this decision. It was a great event to meet students new to the MFT community, reconnect with old colleagues, and build relationships with new peers. The energy and support our participants brought truly made a difference in what one might typically expect to be a stale venture. A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

A belated welcome to a new year with MetroMFT! I am excited to start this year with our newly elected MetroMFT Board!:

Three of the Board members, Jennifer, Taylor, and I, served on the previous Interim Board, during MetroMFT’s first year as an organization. With this continuity, we have the resources to continue to build on the strong foundation that we established last year.

As part of this strong foundation, we made important decisions about how MetroMFT is organized and run. For example, we created a Policies and Procedures manual that outlines Board meeting procedures, the roles and responsibilities of each Board member, policies around elections, and workflow for conferences and other types of events. I am especially proud of the 72 memberships we gained in 2019 and the 8 events that we hosted! Our two large CE opportunities took place through our partnership with University of Maryland and Bowie Youth and Family Services, and we benefited from the generosity of our presenters, Jeff Jackson, Opher Ganel, Bowman & Company, and Tydings & Rosenburg, to provide formal continuing education to our community. Our smaller networking events geared towards community building were equally as successful.

In this first year as the elected President, it is my desire to empower our organization by challenging our members and prospective members to become more actively involved. That means getting more of our committees up and running, holding open Board meetings, and continuing to host CE events that promote our expertise. My goal is also to increase collaboration with other State or regional MFT professional organizations nationwide, and sow the seeds for partnerships with other mental health agencies in our local area, especially when it involves the unique and powerful way that our systems training and licensing enables us to support individuals and families experiencing transitions and difficulties.

Our new Board is very eager, and we have already come together as a cohesive team. We are working on various initiatives that I would like to share with you:

First, for two Board members, there will be an anticipated absence from Board duties while on maternity leave. Baby Fang Brehm is due in early March, and Baby Sidell will be arriving sometime around mid-April! The Board has worked on a plan for managing roles and responsibilities while Jen and I are on our respective maternity leave.

Advocacy Day: SUCCESS! Taylor led us through a productive Advocacy Day! Thank you to the many volunteers who participated and spoke on behalf of our profession. Our task was to meet with Delegates about House Bill 303 and Senators about Senate Bill 182. The Bills were in support of the Sunset Legislation, extending the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists’ timeline for making quality improvements to various processes that provide structure for our profession. Primarily, the Bill is important because it defines our MD Professional Board, allowing it to exist and for Marriage and Family Therapists to exist as a licensed group.

It was fun to be together! I also enjoyed seeing that the legislators recognized our profession as Marriage and Family Therapists and I heard comments on the great work of our lobbyist, Willie Harris, who arranged the meetings and was present to support us. Amongst the group, we met with 17 legislators and many even recognized some specific MetroMFT members who have been present in the past for our Advocacy Day. It shows how important it is for us to have this annual tradition of showing up to advocate for MFTs.

Member Forums: To increase two-way communication, transparency, and member involvement, the Board is instituting two member forums this year. Our first forum will be in early April. The forum gives the Board an opportunity to share with more detail the projects we are working on. It also gives members and prospective members an opportunity for a dialogue with the Board. We will be sending out an event announcement soon!

Fall Conference: Mark you calendars for a late September conference! We are excited to be planning for a full day of workshops. If you have ideas for local presenters, send us your ideas!

Committees: As an organization born from a grassroots movement, we need your continued support. We have various committees, and we need your voice to ensure we continue in a direction that is relevant to our local MFTs. Look for our future announcements regarding information about how to get involved.

Networking is Sweet - Event Update

It was wonderful to see the MetroMFT members who were able to gather for a special networking event today. A huge thank you to Risa for hosting us all in her beautiful home!

It was great to catch up and snack on some delicious treats. We also were able to collect great feedback and brainstorm for future events and increasing memberships.

- Discussed a presentation offering on the financial/business aspect of running a private practice

- Discussed making the website more user friendly when it comes to membership renewals

- Discussion adding information on our MD lobbyist on the website

- Request to Board to send an update to all contacts regarding our fundraising efforts and updates in this area

- Reviewed current nominees and the positions still needing nominees/volunteers (Secretary, Treasurer, and Officer of Operations)

Advocacy Updates

Thank you so much to everyone who came to support the MFTs of Maryland in Annapolis on Advocacy Day! We had a great day of meetings with legislators and their staff where we had the opportunity to educate them on the practice and purpose of our profession. We advocated for the right of Maryland consumers of mental health to have access to qualified professionals who have been trained in relational therapy and discussed current issues that could effect our ability to serve that community.

We couldn't be more grateful for the time and energy you all brought that day. It is this kind of support we need going forward on a more regular basis at the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists meetings that are held the third Friday of every month. Our most pressing need for MFT representation is at their next meeting, this Friday February 15th at 10:30AM, where they will be discussing the current composition of the board and whether or not MFTs should maintain their current representation of three board members or not. As many of you know, obtaining these three seats on the board was quite an accomplishment and required the hard work of many MFTs. We cannot stress the importance of showing the board our commitment to supporting our community and the benefits of maintaining equal representation on the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists of Maryland.

If you can’t make this next meeting, please consider trying to attend when you can make it a part of your schedule or writing letters to the board sharing your experience when MFTs were unequally represented on the board or your fears if this were to happen again.
